Existing gaps between research and clinical practice

There have been existing gaps between research and clinical practice, therefore Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) was introduced to try and bridge those gaps. It does so by changing the emphasis in clinical decision making from “intuition, unsystematic clinical experience, and pathophysiologic rationale” (Zimmerman, 2013) to scientific, clinically relevant research. EBP is a problem -solving approach to healthcare delivery wherein health professionals use the best evidence possible to make clinical decisions for patients. (Melnyk & Fineout-Overhold, 2019). EBP enhances healthcare quality, improves patient outcome, reduce cost, and empowers clinicians. (Laureate Education, 2018).
In view of the above, I reviewed the website of Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) for my discussion. It is a Federal agency charged with improving the safety and quality of America’s healthcare system. The agency develops the knowledge, tools and data needed to improve the healthcare system. AHRQ therefore help Americans, healthcare professionals, and policy makers to make informed health decisions (AHRQ, n.d.).
EBP appears in the AHRQ’s mission statement. The agency’s mission is to produce evidence to make healthcare safer, of higher quality, more accessible, equitable and affordable. AHRQ and its collaborating entities promote and support the synthesis, transfer, and utilization of evidence by identifying feasible, appropriate, meaningful, and effective healthcare practices (AHRQ, n.d.). These would assist in the improvement of healthcare outcomes in America.
I have often used the information on AHRQ’s website in previous assignments and I am always impressed by the quality of their work. My perception that they are the gold standard in quality research has not changed. In conclusion when providers deliver evidence -based care, patient outcomes are markedly improved.

Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?
March 21, 2010, was not EBP’s date of birth, but it may be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to take on the world.
When the Affordable Care Act was passed, it came with a requirement of empirical evidence. Research on EBP increased significantly. Application of EBP spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and more. Health organizations began to adopt and promote EBP.
In this Discussion, you will consider this adoption. You will examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP.
To Prepare:
• Review the Resources and reflect on the definition and goal of EBP.
• Choose a professional healthcare organization’s website (e.g., a reimbursing body, an accredited body, or a national initiative).
• Explore the website to determine where and to what extent EBP is evident.
By Day 3 of Week 1
Post a description of the healthcare organization website you reviewed. Describe where, if at all, EBP appears (e.g., the mission, vision, philosophy, and/or goals of the healthcare organization, or in other locations on the website). Then, explain whether this healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP and why or why not. Finally, explain whether the information you discovered on the healthcare organization’s website has changed your perception of the healthcare organization. Be specific and provide examples.
By Day 6 of Week 1
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by visiting the websites they shared and offering additional examples of EBP or alternative views/interpretations to those shared in your colleagues’ posts.

Discussion – Week 1: Where in the World is Evidence-Based Practice?
Utilization of evidence-based practice (EBP) has brought proven practice from research to the bedside, which has benefited nurses in providing safe and effective patient care (Laureate Education, 2018). EBP provides resources that nurses can rely on when initiating patient treatment. “Research supports that EBP improves healthcare quality and safety, patient outcomes, and healthcare costs as well as empowers clinicians, leading to higher job satisfaction” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019, p. 29). Some healthcare organizations have adopted and implemented evidence-based practice in clinical decision making and have also incorporated evidence-based practice in the organizations’ goals.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is an organization that helps promote health at the global level. According to the organization’s website under “About Us” and “Our values” section, it states “we are guided by the best available science, evidence and technical expertise” (World Health Organization, n.d.). This statement proves that the World Health Organization’s work involves utilizing evidence-based practice in their efforts to impact global health. Their website produces publications and information on health-related issues using reliable resources to educate the public and upholds high ethical standards.
I was always aware of the WHO’s global impact in health promotion; however, I was never aware of the credibility behind the organization. My perception has changed since researching the website because I am better informed on their background and true credibility based upon evidence-based data. The WHO’s website is very informative on global health issues, such as Covid-19. Anyone can access data from this website under “Newsroom” and “Data,” which provides information on news releases, campaigns, and data collections. Health information on various individual countries can also be accessed.

Hello Soyoung,
Its not until we take the time to truly review the organization such as WHO that we learn what resources are available and based in EBP. Good overview.

Hi Soyoung, very informative post regarding the WHO organization. I agree with you that the use of evidence-based practice serves as a resource to nurses to ensure that we are providing best practice available. The use of evidence-based practice is a key component in making certain that patients receive quality care (Chein, 2019). When an organization implements evidence-based practice they are showing that they are committed to providing innovative and quality care.
The WHO is committed to quality health care using the best available evidence-based practice (World Health Organization, n.d.). When I searched evidence-based practice on their website I was able to find many articles of how WHO has taken initiative on positively impacting health care delivery using evidence-based practice. The WHO website also offers journal articles in their publications as you mentioned that can serve as resources when doing research to provide quality care. After reading your initial post and doing my own research I agree that the WHO website is a credible source which provides a lot of current evidence-based practice.

Response 2 to Soyoung Kim
I thought this was a fantastic choice to investigate for Evidence Based Practice. The World Health Organization (WHO) is the pillar of global health. As stated on their website, they work “worldwide to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable” by addressing various issues that affect the global population such as noncommunicable disease prevention, antimicrobial resistance, mental health promotion, and elimination of high-impact communicable diseases that pose potential threat to the masses (WHO, 2020). I have found myself referring to the WHO website for information related to health concerns, specifically the newest Coronavirus strain that has emerged. I feel that information from the WHO site is the most accurate and up-to-date with information. This site addresses healthcare issues that could affect every man, woman, and child globally. The goal of the WHO is to help combat diseases and help build a better future for people everywhere (WHO, 2020). All of the aforementioned would require significant research and standards of processing and disseminating information. So obviously, as you pointed out and as described in the course material, EBP is and should be an integral part, the foundation even, in the work of reliable health organizations like the WHO (Laureate, 2018). Thank you!

The American Nurses Association was founded in 1896. This organization represents nurses while representing and improving healthcare. The ANA is the voice for nurses that thrive off of guidelines, standards, and principles (ANA, n.d.). Evidence-based practice and the ANA both focus on effective and safe patient care. This model consists of quality care, family, and community care that revolves on improving patient outcomes while reducing costs and providing empowerment for healthcare providers (Melnyk, 2018).
The ANA is for the nursing profession to promote a safe environment to promote an environment that advocates for the nurses. One example of this EBP is that the organization advocates is the patient ratio to nurses. This is a safety measure that needs to be evaluated.
This is an issue that needs to be addressed for the safety and care of all patients. Staffing issues can result in adverse advents and outcomes that will comprise the health of individuals. The ANA provides research tools to help in providing EBP that promote health outcomes for anyone that requires service in healthcare.
