The focus for this week is on the concept of health tourism. This is perhaps an aspect of modern health care that you have not considered before but which may have an impact on the patients that we come in contact with. This assignment allows you to consider some of the key issues in health tourism in some detail.

Instructions:

1. Select a surgical procedure (not dental) that Americans regularly have carried out in another country. Then answer the following questions using between 500 and 750 words.

What is your opinion on this form of health tourism? (15%)
What are the risks that patient might face in having this procedure carried out in another country? (15%)
What hurdles does the American patient have to overcome to have the procedure carried out in another country? (15%)
Why would someone want to have the procedure carried out in another country? Explain the cost comparisons and list three advantages of carrying out the procedure in another country (15%)
What is the procedure? How would you explain it to someone who was not a nurse? (15%)
