Navigating Employee Groups
Justin was recently hired as a manager at a medical waste management company. Because he is new to the company and has been assigned to work with a diverse group of employees, Justin’s supervisor asked him to develop an analysis and plan for working with his employee group. This task will help Justin understand his employees, anticipate possible employee interactions, and help him work through group conflict should it arise. Justin decided to create a chart to catalog his analysis and plan.
Research diversity in the workplace using the internet and materials presented in the weekly readings and activities.
Complete the analysis and plan chart.
Employee | Knowledge of employee behavior, background, and habits. | Explain the impact each employee could have on the organization. | Explain the strength this type of employee can bring to the organization. | Explain at least 2 motivational strategies you could use with each employee to increase job satisfaction and job performance. |
George | Does not have a college- level degree but has been working at the company for 30 years | |||
Kelly | Dominant workplace personality and prefers to take charge during projects | Kelly has demonstrated that she has a dominate personality type. The impact that Kelly’s personality type can have on the organization and the team can be both positive and negative. Negative characteristics of Kelly’s personality can be self-confidence. Self-confidence could be indicative of a strong belief system and can come across to others as arrogance. Secondly Kelly can be very direct and gets to the point, this behavior can be indicative of an individual that is blunt when communicating with others. Kelly can also be very decisive and will make decisions without consulting the team. Lastly Kelly can demonstrate traits of assertiveness which could be misinterpreted as aggressive behavior or an aggressive attitude. Positive aspects of Kelly’s personality is that she is a strong leader, and very dependable in stressful situations. Kelly is not afraid to take risk, and her enthusiasm can motivate the team to reach their goals successfully and in a timely manner. (Carlin) 2015 | The advantages that Kelly can bring to the organization are her astute work ethic. Kelly is always the first person to step up to assist anyone that is struggling within the team. Kelly is also the first person to present any ideas that can be beneficial to increasing productivity and assist with smooth transitional work flow. Kelly is very knowledgeable when it comes to her job requirements and knows the organization’s internal and external working mechanisms. Kelly is very efficient in her current position, and with the right approach will be an excellent team member who can assist the team in any way feasible to reach desired, unified goals successfully. | As Kelly has a dominate personality within the workplace forum, it will be challenging to keep her motivated within a team. One of the motivators that can be used to motivate Kelly to increase her job performance is to assign tasks to her that may be a bit challenging to others, by challenging Kelly this will bring out the best in her abilities and emphasize her specific skill set. I would also praise Kelly and recognize her work and congratulate her on a job well done. Secondly I would give Kelly room to demonstrate her creative side and not place restraints on her ideas, if the ideas that Kelly suggest are not beneficial to the team, I would suggest alternatives to reach our goal rather than point out flaws that would stifle Kelly’s enthusiasm.
