For many people, the idea of having a disorder that affects the tongue conjures up a disturbing image: that of a slithering, writhing impulse implanted within the body. What does it do? Where does it go? How does anyone keep it from escaping?

In reality, tongue disorders can be far less terrifying and far more relatable than you might think. Most tongue disorders affect speech in some way, with some being more noticeable than others.

Though the precise cause of tongue disorders is often difficult to pinpoint, most tend to occur as a result of problems with the nerves that control movement or as a result of autoimmune diseases. In some cases, they can also be genetic.

The most common treatment is medication, but other options include surgery, radiation therapy, and physical therapy.
