A 44-year-old patient presents with lump in the chest of approximately 2 cm in diameter. There is a slight dimple over the location of the lump and when the lump is manipulated it seems to be attached to the surrounding tissue. A lumpectomy is performed and the mass is sent to pathology. The pathology report comes back and the mass is confirmed to be an estrogen receptor negative, a progesterone receptor negative and a her2/neu receptor positive breast cancer.

Studies have also shown that a woman’s risk of breast cancer is related to theestrogen and progesterone made by her ovaries (known as endogenous estrogenand progesterone). Being exposed for a long time and/or to high levels of thesehormones has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer

Estrogen is a female hormone made mainly in the ovaries. It’s important for sexual development and other body functions. From your first monthly period until menopause, estrogen stimulates normal breast cells. A higher lifetime exposure to estrogen may increase breast cancer risk.

Estrogen-only HRT increases the risk of breast cancer, but only when used for more than 10 years. Estrogen-only HRT also can increase the risk of ovarian cancer. The higher breast cancer risk from using HRT is the same for so-called “bioidentical” and “natural” hormones as it is for synthetic hormones.
